Feeding the most at-risk people in the Ubud area

Due to COVID-19 millions of people are left without income on the island of Bali. 80% of Bali's economy relies on tourism and with the dramatic 95% drop in tourists arriving since the lockdown in March, the local population is struggling to make ends meet. A community of open-hearted people have created a make-shift kitchen to support those in the greatest need.

This is not an organization.
This is a family.

Right now, our open kitchen with it's enthusiastic team of volunteers is feeding 100-200 people twice a week. It is often that the most vulnerable people are the least visible. That’s why our team goes door-to-door in the Ubud area to witness people’s conditions first-hand. This way we can ensure that those most vulnerable are fed. All meals are made with love and delivered it straight to their doors. With your help we can extend our care even further. Join the community!

Meet Bude

A natural-born mother and caretaker, Bude began cooking simple meals in her kitchen and delivering them to the sick and elderly. Organically, her efforts created a ripple effect as people fell in love with her big heart and sense of humor. This contagious love and laughter goes into every bag of food delivered.

We Take Impeccable Care of the most marginalized people

At the beginning of the pandemic, our efforts were to feed as many people as possible, with a focus on those who truly need it. For five months we provided two hot meals per week to 100-200 individuals who needed it the most. As we drive door to door delivering food, we realized that there were some in much graver need than others. We began to focus in on those suffering from illness and disease like cancer, mental illness and stoke– providing more than just hot meals and groceries, but also hygiene products, stoves and cookware, blankets and clothes. For many people in Bali, times are tough, and for some, it’s unfathomable.

Cantor’s Story

We identified Cantor as a candidate for our care! She lives about 30 minutes North of Ubud in a small straw hut, surrounded by fruit trees. We met Cantor by delivering food to her and her landlord, a local farmer named, Wayan, and his family. Wayan owns and operates a wild organic farm, plentiful with orange trees, avocado tress and red hot chili peppers–– and he graciously gives majority of his produce away to his neighbors, friends and us, for redistribution. Many people in Bali have access to vegetables and fruits, by foraging in the local area. It’s important that we supplement their diets with rice and protein, like tempeh and eggs.

Cantor is about 70 years old, although it’s not clear because her birthday was not recorded. From her bright spirit, you’d never know her living conditions. Her humble abode has simple straw walls, a tin roof, dirt floor and make-shift kitchen– a simple fire pit. She has no toilet or shower. There is a pipe that runs water for cooking and washing along the side of the home. We gifted her some chickens to lay eggs, which are currently living in a basket inside of the house. She has a dirty old mattress, thin sheets and tattered clothing. Cantor is very tidy, organized and sweet. We came to bring her a blanket and some hot lunch. As soon as we entered she threw her arms around us. She was so grateful, smiling and saying “terima kasih”. She’s lived with barely anything her whole life and still has a huge smile on her face.

The Plan

We are building a new home for Cantor and the build is already under way! As soon as we left the property, Bude already had a shipment of wood on the way! Our fearless leader makes things happen quickly and efficiently. The plan is to build a bamboo and wood house for Cantor to spend the rest of her days among the papaya and orange trees in comfort and peace.

The new build will include: Wood and bamboo structure, Cement foundation, Tile floor, Tin roof, Electricity, Outhouse with a toilet, Outdoor shower, Outdoor kitchen attached to house off the side- little awning over the kitchen to protect from elements while cooking, Shelves indoors, Storage under bed and a New mattress.

The home will cost approximately $1,000, this includes labor and materials. A small price to give someone a level of health, comfort and dignity. I will update this page with details on cost in real time, we are currently working to make this happen as soon as possible with friendly local builders and recycled materials. This home will last for the rest of Cantor’s beautiful life.
